Understanding Fontan Biology

A molecular and cellular perspective on cardiovascular research

Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria

Our Vision

Fontan circulation creates both physiological and metabolic challenges. Fontanomics investigates these abnormalities at molecular and cellular levels to develop targeted therapies that improve patient lives.

Research Focus Areas

Four interconnected research topics advancing our understanding of Fontan circulation

Topic 1: Molecular Foundations

Reimagining the fundamentals – "Coming back to the blackboard"
Hypothesis

A return to basic physiology and biochemistry is key to address the unique challenges in Fontan circulation.

Primary aim

To develop mechanistic approaches to comprehend altered core physiological and biological processes in patients with a Fontan circulation.

Secondary aim

To reveal links between small molecule analytes on biochemistry basis, on transcriptomic and genomic basis that drive Fontan-related comorbidities and circulatory failure.

Topic 2: The Fontan Radar

Harnessing the power of advanced Biomarkers and Omics
Revolution

Omics technologies are medical revolution. They are key to unraveling the complex origins of Fontan-related comorbidities.

Better biomarkers

We are also exploring the full potential of existing biomarkers, whether they are published in literature on Fontan circulation and general cardiology.

Aim

To develop an accurate prognosis: By strategically employing biomarkers, we aim to improve diagnostics, foresee long-term complications, and predict major adverse events with accuracy.

Topic 3: Cardiac Metabolism

Metabolism: a major factor determining outcomes in Fontan?
Hypothesis

Metabolic and regulatory processes, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and immunity, are determining Fontan outcomes.

Aim

We are integrating hemodynamic and metabolic evaluations to create a more complete picture of Fontan pathophysiology.

Topic 4: Metabolic Therapies

Expanding treatment options to live a full life with half a heart.
Consortium

Our consortium intends advancing clinical trials focused on metabolic interventions for selected subgroups of patients with a Fontan circulation.

Aim

To develop a comprehensive approach that extends from traditional therapies to lifestyle medicine for sustained quality of life.
